Karen V. Hansen, Professor of Sociology & Women's and Gender Studies
"Scandinavian Landtaking on a Dakota Reservation: A Gendered Mosaic"
With the sanction of the U.S. government, hundreds of impoverished Scandinavian immigrants took possession of Dakota Indian land in the early twentieth century. Professor Hansen will explore the impact of this massive dispossession, the surge of Scandinavian women's land ownership that it triggered, and the diverse and gendered forms of conflict and cooperation that ensued.
