Movie: A Hero for Daisy
Award-winning documentary on a Title IX event that revolutionized women's life in sports for good
Wednesday, October 4 @ 7:30PM
A Hero for Daisy is a 40 minute film about Title IX pioneer and two-time Olympian Chris Ernst, who galvanized her rowing team to storm the Yale athletic director's office in 1976, protesting the lack of athletic facilities for women. Nineteen athletes stripped, exposing the phrase "Title IX" in blue marker (referring to legislation enacted in 1972, mandating gender equity for all institutions receiving federal aid). The impact was immediate and national in scope.
NPR Review: "A remarkable film...the triumph of the film is that it is upbeat and funny, never preachy, always entertaining... it made me grateful that my daughters, now 13 and 10, can take advantage of opportunities that girls and women who came before them in every field of endeavor have won and defended..." - Bill Littlefield, NPR (host of NPR's "Only a Game").
Guest speakers at the event will be Mary Mazzio, the director of the film and Olympic athlete, and Holly Metcalf, 1984 Olympic gold medalist .
