The Center for New Words is dedicated to a simple mission:
To use the power and creativity of words and ideas to strengthen the voice of progressive and marginalized women in society.
To accomplish this mission, The Center for New Words programs support diverse women‘s engagement with the entire “word cycle,“ from literacy to blogging to literary writing to opinion-making in the media and other domains of influence. Built on the wisdom, commitments, and competencies of 28 years of running New Words Bookstore, CNW has claimed a place in the cultural life of Boston and the world at large.
Our resources, programs, and mission affirm the value of diversity. Our work extends into communities along multi-dimensional axes, including race, age, ethnicity, class, and sexuality. In an increasingly commercial, standardized society, our programming is a redoubt of pluralism and originality. With our independence and our outreach to marginalized writers, activists, and readers, we stand to offer current and future generations of feminists critically-needed space, encouragement, and resources to thrive.
At the same time, the transformation from New Words Bookstore to the Center for New Words provides a model to other progressive groups. Especially in today’s political climate, we intend to demonstrate the possibility of creative organizational change without the loss of established resources and knowledgeor the loss of momentum gained by progressives in civil society.
