I remember the excitement the day New Words Bookstore opened on Washington Street all those many years ago, and am delighted that it is disappearing only to reappear in a new form. I fully support the way the Center for New Words is proposing to reorganize so as to meet the expanded needs of the wider women’s community. The fact that New Words Bookstore managed to survive when many other independent bookstores succumbed to economic competition from the chain stores and internet is a tribute to its flexibility and commitment over the long haul. I certainly hope that the new, expanded vision of the Center for New Words will find the financial and cultural support it needs so that its impact will be felt not only in our community, but nationally and it can serve as a model for similar endeavors elsewhere.
