New Words pioneered the role of a bookstore as the catalyst for coalescing, recognizing, nurturing and strengthening a community which society at that time neither recognized nor supported but suppressed. In doing so, New Words transcended geography, yet always served as a local support center and spiritual and intellectual home.

New Words has in fact been a vital part of many communities. In particular, New Words has been extraordinarily generous with its time and expertise with other bookstores, specialty and general, throughout all these years. As so many booksellers now confront the issues of “succession,” NEBA salutes New Words as it makes its transition — transformation, really — into a new model of service to community. New Words is again pioneering and all of us will benefit from the trailblazing
